In all, this is a smart example of this first edition of Chatwin's second book. It is the story of one man's attempt to impose order on a lawless society in the early 19th century. Chatwin takes the reader on an exhilarating journey from the swamps and slave-trading ports of West Africa to the opulent courts of the Moors. The novel tells the tale of Abd el-Kader of the Maghreb and his struggle against French colonial rule. Chatwin brings the complex culture, religion and lives of the Moors vividly to life. This is an exciting and enthralling story of one man's struggle to preserve a way of life in the face of overwhelming odds.
