Published by Michael Joseph, London; 1947. 8vo. 263pp. First edition, first impression. Condition: Near Fine/Very Good.

Bound in original red cloth with title in silver to the spine. The binding is square and tight and in smart condition, with no signs of marking or damage, with just some bumping and slight darkening to the edges. Inside, the ages are clean and bright, free from blemishes or wear, with only some minor toning to the edges.

The book is housed in its original first issue dust jacket. There is some shelf wear to the edges, with a little chipping to the edges, with a small tear to the bottom edge of the rear panel and a little loss to the top of the spine. There is slight rubbing to the jacket and small marks to the bottom front corner.

In all, this is a smart example of this first edition by F. L. Green, arguably one of his most important novels. It is a fascinating and dramatic story as well as a subtly satirical study of the modern world. It looks at the impact on modern life of a new strip-cartoon, representing the Adventures, Ideas and Hopes of an ordinary man, a picturesque hero who journeys across the contemporary scene. He is a modern Don Quixote, but stronger, more positive, someone to be reckoned with. A reflection, in fact, of modern man to whom governments are answerable, a fragment of glass in which man has seen and recognised himself.
