In all, this is a lovely example of this first edition from Woodman's Nathaniel Drinkwater series. The novel follows Drinkwater in 1807, when he is once again dispatched on a semi-secret mission by spymaster Lord Dungarth, is tempted by a foreign beauty, and captured by his enemies. This time, though, the mission takes place in the Pacific Northwest, where Drinkwater is sent to foil Russian attempts at south-of-Alaska settlement and to prevent a Russo-Spanish alliance in northern California. Richard Woodman retired from a 37 nautical career in 1997 in order to commit to writing full time. He is both a novelist and a naval historian, and his Nathaniel Drinkwater series is made up of 14 book, of which this is the 8th.
