Published by Jonathan Cape, London; 1998. 8vo. 479pp. First edition, first impression. Condition: Fine/ Near Fine.

Bound in its original black cloth boards with title in gilt to the spine. The binding is square and tight, free from marks or damage, save a little bumping to the spine ends. Inside, the pages are clean and bright, blemish-free and with no signs of wear or ageing.

The book is housed in its original, first issue, dust jacket. The jacket is also in smart condition, vibrant and bright and with just one mark to the bottom of the spine, which appears to be white paint or similar, and a touch of bumping to the edges.

In all, this is a smart example of this modern first by Adam Thorpe. It is a modern novel steeped in a resonant past: where rural England and colonial Africa collide. Densely wrought and vividly imagined, it is a fictional triumph - thrilling and unforgettable (blurb).
