Published by Jonathan Cape, London; 2005. 8vo. 279pp. First edition, first impression. Condition: Fine/Near Fine.

Bound in original black cloth boards with title in gilt to the spine. The binding is square and tight and in very smart condition, with no marks or damage to speak of save a little bumping to the spine ends. Inside, the pages are clean and bright and free from blemishes or wear, the book tightly bound and appearing practically unread.

The book is housed in its original first issue dust jacket. It is in lovely condition, with no signs of wear and tear, save some bumping to the spine ends and corners. It is otherwise a very smart example.

In all, this is a very collectible example of this modern first by Ian McEwan. This book is an example of McEwan in his Prime. Following on from Atonement, widely considered a masterpiece, this work shares its confident, graceful prose and its remarkable perceptiveness, but is perhaps even more dramatically compelling, showing how life can change in an instant, for better or worse (blurb). It tells of a day in the life of one man, a neurosurgeon in London, in a world post 9/11, on the cusp of war in Iraq. A day filled with thoughts of war and morality, of poetry, music and love, and ending in a family reunion. Winner of the James Tait Black Award for Fiction in 2005.
