Published by Jonathan Cape, London; 1983. 8vo. 287pp. First edition, first impression Condition: Very Good+/Near Fine.
Bound in original black cloth boards with title in gilt to the spine. The binding is square and tight and in very smart condition, with just a little bumping to the spine ends and a faint dent to the rear board. Inside, the pages are clean and bright, free from blemishes and damage, with just a touch of toning to the pages. The book has the words Park Shop printed to the top edge.
The book is housed in its equally smart, original dust jacket. There is slight shelf wear to the edges, with a tiny tear to the bottom of the front panel and a small mark to the rear, but it remains in lovely condition all the same.
In all, this is a smart example of this modern first by Rushdie, winner of the Booker Prize for his novel Midnight Children. As captivating fairy-tale, devastating political satire and exquisite, uproarious entertainment, Shame is a novel without rival. It is a saga complete with political coup, wedding scandal and apocalypse (blurb).
