Published by Geoffrey Bles, London; 1950. First Edition, First Printing. Illustrated by Pauline Baynes. 8vo. Condition: Very Good / Very Good.
First edition, first printing of this children'a classic, the first in the much loved Chronicles of Narnia series by C. S. Lewis. Bound in it's original green cloth boards with some fading and bumping to the spine, and some sunning and spotting to the boards. There is a pen mark to the top of the rear board. However, the binding remains tight and in smart condition. Inside, there is a crossed out ownership inscription to the fep and ffep, and a few open marks to the illustration on pp. 35. These are however, the only points to note internally, and the pages are clean and bright and still tightly affixed to the binding. It is beautifully illustrated by Pauline Baynes.
The book is housed in a later, 5th impression clipped jacket. It is very smart, with just a little bumping and chipping to the edges, including a closed tear to the top front edge and a very small tear to the top of the spine on the rear. It is again, in very good, clean condition, and the issues noted are minor.
Overall, this is a beautiful, smart example of this very hard to find children's first. This series has been loved by generations, and continues to be enjoyed children today. This is an excellent example of this first edition at a reasonable price and would sit complement any collection, or make a very special gift.
