In all, this is a smart edition of this historical novel by Sir Walter Scott. He initially published the novel anonymously in 1814, as his first venture in to writing prose, already being established as a poet. It follows the life of Edward Waverley, a young English gentleman who is commissioned into a Scottish regiment shortly prior to the Jacobite rising of 1745. He finds himself forced to choose between his loyalty to the Crown and his admiration for the romantic cause of the Jacobites. The novel was well received by critics and readers alike and although he didn't openly claim it as his own, it was an open secret that he was the author.
