Published by Macmillan & Co., London; 1960. 8vo. 327pp. First edition, first impression. Condition: Near Fine/Very Good.

Bound in original green cloth boards, the biding is square and tight and in smart condition, with just a little bumping an sunning to the spine ends and corners. Inside, the pages are clean and bright, with just some toning and the occasional age spot. It is otherwise free from blemishes or damage.

The book is housed in its original first issue dust jacket. There is some sunning to the spine, rear, and edges, and some shelf wear to the edges. In spite of this, however, it remains bright and smart.

In all, this is a smart example of this first edition by Nancy Hale. It is an intriguing story about the precarious relationship between a young woman from Vermont and a Southern community which sometimes acts as though the Civil War never happened. Nancy Hale's wit, her gentle but shrewd eye for mannerisms and characters, and her evocative style make the small world of Starkeyville, Virginia, vivid and revealing (blurb).
