In all, this is a lovely example of this biography on Hemingway. It was the first to examine, in detail, Hemingway's path through wartime Europe, including his participation in the D-Day landings, and his presence on the front line at the Battle of the Bulge. It chronicles his tangled personal life, his encounters with leading figures of the time, and the impact of his experience of war, both on Hemingway the writer and Hemingway the man. Above all, it seeks to separate fact from fiction, myth from reality, and to assess the contribution of this part of his life to the enduring legend of 'Papa' Hemingway.
