It chronicles his tangled personal life, his encounters with leading figures of the time, and the impact of his experience of war, both on Hemingway the writer and Hemingway the man. Above all, it seeks to separate fact from fiction, myth from reality, and to assess the contribution of this part of his life to the enduring legend of 'Papa' Hemingway.
