Published by Flamingo, London; 1994. 8vo. 239pp. First edition, first impression. Condition: Near Fine/Very Good+

Bound in original grey cloth boards with title in gilt to the spine. The binding is square and tight and in very smart condition. There is a small stain on the bottom edge and a touch of bumping to the spine ends, but the boards are otherwise in excellent condition. Inside, the pages are clean and bright, free from blemishes and wear, with barely a hint of toning.

The book is housed in its original, first issue dust jacket, illustrated by Chris Moore. There are a few small marks across the bottom of the panels, slight sunning to the tope edge and a touch of bumping to the spine ends. It remains in smart condition however, complementing the book very well.

In all, this is a smart example of this first edition by J. G. Ballard. It is the story of sixteen year old Neil Dempsey, who finds himself caught up in veteran campaigner Dr Barbara Rafferty's obsessive crusade to save the albatross on the deserted Pacific atoll of Saint-Esprit. It is a brilliant and controversial satire on extremism, guaranteed to ruffle the feathers of environmentalists, animal rights activists and feminists (blurb).
