Published by Jonathan Cape, London; 1983. 8vo. 287pp. First edition, first impression Condition: Fine/Near Fine.

Bound in original black cloth boards with title in gilt to the spine. The binding is square and tight and in very smart condition, with just a little bumping to the spine ends. Inside, the pages are clean and bright, free from blemishes and damage, with just a touch of toning to the pages.

The book is housed in its equally smart, original dust jacket. It is vibrant and bright and in excellent condition, designed by Mon Mohan. There is a touch of bumping to the spine ends and a small stain to the bottom of the front panel, but it remains in lovely condition.

In all, this is a smart example of this modern first by Rushdie, winner of the Booker Prize for his novel Midnight's Children. Sandwiched between the publication of Rushdie's most acclaimed novel, Midnight's Children, and his most controversial work, The Satanic Verses, this novel is sometimes overlooked. However, as captivating fairy-tale, devastating political satire and exquisite, uproarious entertainment, Shame is a novel without rival. It is a saga complete with political coup, wedding scandal and apocalypse (blurb).
