Published by Jonathan Cape, London; 1995. 8vo. 434pp. First edition, first impression. Condition: Fine/Very Good+.

Bound in original black cloth boards with title in gilt to the spine. The binding is square and tight, clean and free from marks or damage, save a touch of bumping to the spine ends. Inside, the pages are clean and bright and in lovely, clean condition.

The book is housed in its smart, first issue, dust jacket. Illustrated by Dennis Leigh, the jacket is vibrant and bright with no marks or wear, save some minor rubbing to the rear panel and a little shelf wear to the edges, with a couple of tiny tears to the front corners.

In all, this is a smart example of this first edition by Salman Rushdie, shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1995. It is narrated by Moraes Zogoiby, know as 'Moor', and it tells the breathless tale of his family's 'often grotesque but compulsively moving fortunes, and the tragicomic transformations wrought by love.' It is a brilliantly entertaining, ambitious, satirical and compassionate tale. 'A love song to a vanishing world, but also its last hurrah.'
