Published by Smith, Elder & Co., London; 1853. 8vo. 3 vols. First Edition. Condition: Very Good+

A very rare and handsome set of what many consider to be Charlotte Bronte’s finest novel, surpassing even ‘Jane Eyre’. The binding is in very smart condition, with just some general rubbing and scuffing. There is some fading to the spine, although it remains attractive. In all, the wear is minor and in no way detracts from this smart set.

Inside, there is a neat ownership inscription to the ffep. The pages are clean and bright with only some minor toning and age spotting. Lacks the half-title and adverts at end.

This novel was perhaps the most autobiographical of all Charlotte Bronte’s works, written using her experiences in Brussels as its basis. It is believed she portrayed her real and imagined relationship with her mentor in Brussels, the married Professor M. Heger, through the characters of John Bretton and M. Paul Emmanuel.

In all, this is an extremely smart and collectible set of this very rare first edition by one of the literary greats. These volumes would be sure to compliment any literary set they grace.
